Waiting for Spring

I’ll be honest, guys.

I really struggle with this time of year.

By the time March hits, it’s been cold for so long (especially this year) that I’ve forgotten how summer feels. It’s still dark. I’m tired of my winter clothes and of wearing a giant coat. I feel like I’m slogging through life.

I want spring, that delicate green mist stealing over the trees, sunshine that has real power to warm, sidewalks without snow (she says, knowing there is more shovelling to be done in the morning), long walks, the garden, light skirts and jackets, and someday a nice restaurant patio.

In the meantime, I’m doing what I can. I’m exercising. I’m seeing friends. I’m keeping a poinsettia from Christmas alive. I’m trying to take care of my body…which seems to be working since, knock wood, I haven’t gotten sick this winter for a change. (I credit one or all of the following: vitamin D, vitamin C, or the raw marinated onions that my East Indian mother-in-law feeds me as a side dish several times a week.) I’m trying to be gentle with myself.

But sometimes all I can do is hang in there, hibernate as best I can while working full-time, and wait for those first hints of green.

Sadly, I live in Canada, so it’s going to be a while.

How about you? When does spring come where you are? Do you find winter tough, or do you thrive in the cold? Or do you live in a hot climate and look forward to the cooler months?
