The Elusive Author

I hope y’all appreciate what we’re doing for you. Do you know hard it is for us authors to leave our dark caves and step out into the sunlight? Or any light?

And then, to put ourselves on display, where other people can see us.

It’s madness.

It burns, the light.

Being an author can be a little schizophrenic at times. Most of us–not all of us, certainly–but most of us are introverts, which makes sense, as writing can be a very solitary pastime. No one else can see in your head and write your stories with you.

Because writing is such a personal thing, we’re used to working alone, maybe coming out once or twice a month to interact with other authors such as at a critique group, and then retreating back to wherever we go and do our things.

But, alas, we can’t hunker down in our holes all the time, not in the current publishing industry. We have to come out. We have to interact with our readers, promote our books, be visible and accessible.

It’s hard, for a lot of us.

But as hard as that is, I think a lot of us flail the most when we have to come out in person–when we do book signings, or readings, or, like we’re doing tomorrow (and last week), hang out on videocasts and try to sound intelligent and personable and awesome.

Appreciate it while you get it, darlings. Come Thursday, we’re all retreating into our holes again.

If you missed us last week, you can find the video transcript here.

And if you’d like to catch us tomorrow (Feb 11, 7 PM EST), like our Facebook page so you can get the link once it becomes available.

Hiiisssssss, the liiiiight
