Marie Kondo, Queer Eye, and Rejuvenation

Sometimes, things just come together.

I love Marie Kondo’s Tidying Up. I’ve watched every episode. She’s so cute! And she helps people enjoy their lives more! What’s not to love?

And Queer Eye–I’ve loved Queer Eye since the first episode I saw, way back when. I love the new one maybe more–no, I can’t say that. I love them both, and every single one of the guys in both shows. But I did watch the new one more recently than any of the old ones (all of season 3 on Netflix in approximately four days after it was released ahem)

Rejuvenation–well, roomie was avoiding something, and I commented on how I wanted time to paint my room, and she painted my room! This color. It’s called Rejuvenation.

Naturally, to get the walls painted, nearly everything had to be moved out of the room. My bed and my desk stayed, pushed into the middle of the room, but everything else outside my closet was removed.

Did I mention this was spring break? This was spring break. Roomie’s school doesn’t have the office staff work over break, but my school does. So my room got painted and it’s BEAUTIFUL and I LOVE IT, and the tape got removed, and I just kept not finding time to move all my stuff back in. Because I was tired. Because I was busy. Because my room was so nice without all the crap in it!

Reader, I don’t actually have a lot of crap. My big bookcase takes up 3/4 of my closet, the other 1/4 is clothes. There’s some stuff on the shelf over the rod, but not that much. In my room itself, a bed, a desk, a file cabinet. A set of shelves I used as a nightstand, and a dresser. A small bookcase of more-accessible books. Under-bed storage.

Somehow, a lot of under-bed storage. And did I really pull TWO empty containers out? How did they even get stuck under there when they were empty? And why do I still buy my paper by the case when I do a lot less printing than I used to?

My walls are so pretty now. I don’t want to cover them in pictures!

And so we have the collision of Marie Kondo–does this bring me joy?–and Queer Eye–I deserve a room that makes me happy–caused by Behr Rejuvenation.

Works for me. Except now I have so much work to do…

After a couple days of thinking about it, I’ve decided that my starting point should be the shelf in my closet. I pretty much NEVER touch any of the stuff up there. So if I can shift that stuff out, narrow down the stuff that goes under the bed and put it up there instead…my bed just feels so heavy when I’m aware of all the crud stuffed under it!

So yeah. Sort, give away, slim down the stored stuff. Then the bookcase comes out of the closet and my dresser goes in, because after trying it out for a while, I’ve actually decided I want a little more than a week’s worth of work clothes and two not-for-work shirts.

Weed the bookcase, and see if I can’t combine it with the little one, and that’s a piece of furniture out of my room. I’ve already moved the rug from the foot of my bed (divided the room up, and it’s not really big enough for that) and the mat for my desk chair since I switched from a rollie chair to a normal one, I don’t need it to protect the floor. New chair also goes under my desk as the last one didn’t (arms too high for the keyboard shelf) so that helps too.

I’ve told myself for years that I don’t need to declutter. I have waaayyyy less stuff than lots of people. And it’s true. The important question, it turns out, actually has nothing to do with anyone else. The only question that actually matters is–do I have waaaayyyy more stuff than I want?

Looks like it. So I’ll be doing something about it.

Anyone want a never-used set of bonsai tree care tools?

Are you sure?

One Comment:

  1. Heyyy, my attic is almost that exact colour! I love it, too. If you’re looking for coordinating colours, I recommend a dark slate blue and a warm tan.

And good luck with the decluttering!
