Gilmore Girls: My New Obsession

Back in May, I tweeted this:

Why, you ask? What’s the big deal? Well, that’s the thing. It is a big deal. I totally missed it. It was never on my radar. I’d heard of it, and was curious, but never curious enough to you know, sit down and watch it.

Of course, in my defense, those were the days when I was doing a lot of photography and writing. I didn’t really watch TV much. Except CSI. Because forensics.

But I digress.

If you’re not familiar with the awesomeness that is Gilmore Girls, let me give you a short primer: There’s this woman, Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter Rory (short for Lorelai). Lorelai got pregnant with Rory when she was sixteen. She was a single mother. Her parents are rich and into rich-people things, and basically feel she ruined her life by getting pregnant. And have no problem telling her that to her face.

Lorelai and Rory live in Stars Hollow, a literal small town where you can walk everywhere and everyone knows everyone else. There are some cool and quirky characters: Luke, the perpetually grumpy owner of the diner where Lorelai and Rory go for breakfast (and coffee!) every day; there’s Taylor, who owns a supermarket and is mostly an ass; there’s Babette who lives in a house made for shorter people (who isn’t shorter herself) and is with a really tall man and has funerals for her dead pets; there’s Rory’s best friend Lane who is awesome (and Korean) and cool but has a very traditional, controlling mother; there’s Sookie, who’s Lorelai’s best friend and a chef; there’s the town troubadour who can be seen playing songs on his guitar and was almost not the town troubadour because of in-fighting….

Yeah. Cool town. Cool people.

My mom started watching it one night, and I saw parts of it. They play reruns on the Uplifting Network. But I never saw it in sequence, so a lot of it didn’t make sense. So my mom took out her DVD set of Season 1 (which I gave her for Christmas) and started watching it from the beginning. I didn’t really see the pilot, but I think I jumped in around episode two or three. Our little routine is to watch one or two episodes a night. We’re now up to Season 4.

Why am I so obsessed? Well, I just plain like Lorelai and Rory and all the crazy people in town. I like that there’s a lot of very normal teenage stuff going on with Rory (first date, first boyfriend, starting a new school and being overwhelmed and terrified and afraid no one will like you—wait, that was me. And her) and all the struggles of single motherhood for Lorelai. Rory’s father shows up every once in awhile and shakes everything up. And then there’s Lorelai’s relationship with her parents. It’s strained, at best.

And then there’s the humor! ZOMG both Lorelai and Rory are so witty and quick with the one liners and jokes and sarcasm. I swear, I want to be one of them when I grow up.

And then you see a lot of other things happening: people new to town, which is always a big deal; new jobs; drama llama stuff, festivals, and the diner…which is probably my favorite thing. I also really like Luke despite his tough exterior and I am madly shipping Lorelai with him. Don’t. Judge. He’s like the best person for her.

Oh, yeah. Mom and also discuss spoilers. Because…spoilers. Drama! Fun! Knowing what happens before it happens! And we have Opinions, thankyouverymuch.

So, anyway, that’s what’s going on in my little corner of the world. Every night around 9 or 10, Mom and I “get Gilmored.” LOL.

We’ve decided that once we’ve watched every season (including the special “here’s when they are older and hopefully wiser” show), we will start over from the beginning and do it again.

We’re insane. But hey, it’s a great place to be.

One Comment:

  1. Oooh, my mother and I loved that show too! I didn’t make it all the way through, though, so I didn’t watch the TV movie that came out recently, for fear of spoilers. I moved away from home after season 4 and didn’t have a TV, and somehow never went back later to watch the whole thing. Need to find time to do that…it was a really fun show!
