Back to School AAAHH

I work at a school. Last Thursday, my teachers came back. Next Thursday, my kids come back.

My life gets pretty hectic this time of year. I love my teachers, my job, and my kids, but good lork.

A conversation from today, in script form:

Staff: Our smart board (basically a huge touch screen attached to a computer) doesn’t work.

Me, bounding out of my chair to go have a look: Still? I reported it yesterday, and IT said they fixed it this morning.

Staff: Oh, no, I hadn’t had the chance to check it today.

(A short period of time passes)

Staff: Our smart board still doesn’t work.

Me: Did it work at all before it started back doing the thing?

Staff: Oh, it’s not doing the same thing. Now it just comes up, says “no signal” and goes black.

Me: That’s the monitor. The computer is off.

Staff: What computer?

Me: ~goes into classroom, turns computer on the back of the monitor on~

Time: ~passes~

SAME STAFF, at my desk again: Our keyboard and mouse don’t work for the smart board.

Me: Did you check the batteries?

Staff: First thing.

Me: ~goes into classroom, checks motion of mouse, checks laser is not obstructed, notices mouse is not turned on, turns it on. Sees on/off switch on keyboard is also set to OFF, turns on. Turns glare on staff member.~

Staff: I…Diet Coke, right? Or dark chocolate?

Me: Both. Don’t you think?

Staff: …yeah. I do.

The staff member is not USUALLY such a doofus…but it’s the beginning of the year. We’re all running around like chickens with our heads cut off (fun note–I’ve actually seen that! It’s really weird. And they do actually run around! Farm kids see things, man.)

I’m trying to get all the data shoved into the system before school starts. I’m trying to order stuff for teachers, because chairs are important in classrooms. I’m trying to coordinate moving furniture. I’m accepting deliveries. I’m registering students. I’m learning the ways of a new principal. Trying to catch former principal (who’s been promoted) for the things that are still his and not new principal’s. I’m very gently hounding our facilities person about getting the AC going in the principal’s office and two classrooms.

Did you know we’re breaking records here in Tucson? We really need that AC!

So anyway. Yesterday I forgot to post. And today when I got off work, I headed for the nearest pool and remained neck-deep for a long time. And then I came home tired and happy and wanted to go to bed, but nooooo, there’s this thing I kept forgetting to do…

Thanks, past me. Thanks a lot. šŸ˜›

Today I emailed registration packets to our families and within an hour, two parents had emailed back completed packets, and one had come in to do it by hand. I think they’re ready for summer to be over! Are you?
