Bringing the Fun Back

So I was scrolling through my Facebook feed and stumbled across this: Sweet-Ass Affirmations 2 / A Card Deck for Creative Maniacs . Of course I was intrigued. I followed the link, and discovered something truly awesome. It’s an affirmation deck, which is cool. Now I don’t currently own any, nor have I really delved into them before, but hey, there’s a first time for everything. But what got my muse all a-flutter was the idea of fun and play and creative and mania and bringing out the joy in life – because, c’mon now, we all need that, but for me, I’ve been thinking about this VERY THING. It’s like the Universe is giving me a gentle nudge. Synchronicity. Because I was just thinking that I needed to make my writing fun again. I’ve been struggling for weeks on my novella. I’m in the process of loosely plotting it, building a bit of a roadmap to follow, as is my process, and I’ve found myself horribly stuck. The idea was exciting and interesting and fun months ago when I thought of it. Now? It just feels like work. It could be that everything these days feels like work. Work’s been crazy, my sleep is still not right, I haven’t been feeling good about anything, the pandemic has been getting me down (we’re still not out of the woods, but that’s another post), and I just feel very….hopeless? Pointless? Crappy? Right now. I can’t even put my finger on it,…

A Rare Snow Day

In most of Southern Arizona, snow is a rarity and a delight. A few years ago, the main school district here had its first ever snow day–and no one in admin or the state knew how to handle it. They didn’t want any buses going over any bridges (ice! ZOMG!) but they didn’t want to cancel school because we don’t build snow days into the schedule here. It would have thrown EVERYTHING off. So they ended up having a four-hour delay, and by then no one was coming to school. I think we got about fifty kids total, out of eight hundred, who had shown up before the district decided what to do. They spent the morning playing in the snow. Now that I own my home, I’m aware that hoping for snow (and obvi, the cold weather that comes with it) is a silly thing to do. Citrus trees like I have in my back yard do not love snow. The new trees that I had planted back in November aren’t ready for snow. Heck, the mature, huge palm trees in the front yard aren’t big fans either, I’m sure. The last struggling tomato plant of my garden, with about five green tomatoes still clinging on, is not going to do well in snow. (And, worse, the 29° predicted for tonight.) But it’s so pretty. This morning driving to work, the Catalinas were white all the way to the foothills. The Rincons too, when I could see them beyond…

Too Serious, Let’s Have Fun

So, things have gotten Real. Everything’s shut down, people are worried about not having toilet paper, no one’s going anywhere…it’s the apocalypse! (Whelp, I spelled that wrong, booo.) I’m sure someday we’ll all have a chuckle about this, but right now, being in the thick of things…not so much. I’ve been anxious every day. I imagine you all are too, or in some form of emotional distress. So I’ve decided to quit with the seriousness and go for the fun. Today is St. Patrick’s Day. If I drank, I’d definitely pour myself a glass of Bailey’s Irish Cream and sing an Irish Drinking song or two. In case you hate Who Line is it Anyway, here are some pretty and cute pictures I got off Pixabay to hopefully calm your distress. Also, some friends and I got together and put together a little book fair thing for solidarity during this trying time — all books are FREE. This is going on till 3/20, so grab those books while you can! BIG HONKING LINK HERE BECAUSE I CAN’T DOWNLOAD THE IMAGE FILE LOL So how does that make you feel? Hopefully better! Now prepare some comfort foods, grab some wine (or soda if you don’t drink), and enjoy the company of your favorite humans. And non-humans. Cats, dogs, hamsters…you get the idea. 😉 And when you’re done eating and drinking and making merry, cuddle your beloveds close. We’re going to get through this.

We Must Escape!

In honor of V-Day, friends, I’m going to tell you about what we did for V-Day. I surprised my husband with a trip to a local escape room. Do you guys have these where you live? In case you don’t, these are places that offer a number of rooms (and they are literal rooms) filled with clues and puzzles. You have one hour to solve all the puzzles and escape! (A lot of them are literally that–figure out how to get out of the room–but some have a goal you have to achieve before escaping, such as solving a mystery.) We quite a few around here, and they’ve been on my radar for a while, but we haven’t managed to get to one before. But Friday we had a free night, so I booked us a room at a new one close by because they wouldn’t smoosh us in with random people (some places will stick small groups with other small groups, and that did not sound like a good date). The end goal for our room was to steal the diamond before the detectives arrived. Our gamemaster was very sweet, giving us a rundown on how the whole process worked since we’d never done one before. She warned us that it might be a little hard for just two people, especially first-timers, and let us know how to ask for a clue if we needed one. And then she locked our phones away and let us into the room. It was…
