Plans are Fun!

So due to my youthful indescretions of taking more courses than I could handle way back when (I’m a wild woman, I tell you!) my college financial aid was denied this semester. As with all things bureaucratic, an appeals process exists. Part of it is to lay out a plan to get your degree. Class by class, what will you take to fulfill each and every requirement, and do it in a decent amount of time?

Umm…

Luckily I had an advisor to help me. Here’s how the conversation went.

“Okay, you need a Fine Arts class. Here are the choices.”

“Ooh, drawing! And design, and–wait, I could take photography? Ooh, Art and Culture through Gothic–“

“All of those have prerequisites. Here’s what you need–Art 100.”

“But then I could take all the others?”

“They’re not in your degree program, so no. Not if you want Financial Aid.”

“But could I take them if I pay for them?”

“KD…you won’t have time. Later. For now, pick a science class. Here are the choices.”

“Ooh, biology! No, anatomy! Chemistry! Oh, look, astronomy! Geology–“

“KD…”

“Right, right…damn! Sorry. Umm…biology. No, geology! Meteorology?”

“KD…”

“Sorry! Geology. I swear. I mean, biology.”

I’m sure it was a frustrating hour or so for the man, but I now have a “degree plan.” If my appeal is successful, I’ll have to stick to it. Luckily, it is packed full of classes that I want to take. I’ll just…go back and take the rest later…

Currently the plan is to get my degree (somehow!) and then beg and plead till I get hired at the University of Arizona. Then, when the tuition is WAY LOWER because I’m an employee, and the choices are EVEN MORE DIVERSE, I will take ALL THE THINGS.

Of course I will still write books. And in the summers I will explore the galaxy the world.

It is an excellent plan. Can’t wait to see how it works out.

(Hint: did you ever hear the saying “if you want to hear God laugh, tell him your plans”? )
