Stuff Making Me Happy Right Now

Hush, this is a totally legitimate blog post.

First up, The Mummy. I stumbled across an article about it this week, which of course made me want to go watch it. I arranged my schedule to do so (basically that meant deciding “sod off, writing, I’m gonna go enjoy” and went to grab it from the movie shelf and–no movie. No movieS, I should say, as I had the set. I checked the kid’s room (she wasn’t home, has been told before to stop stashing my movies in her room, and walks in my bedroom any time she pleases, so no, I don’t feel bad) then called her to demand where the hades my movie was.

No idea. Of course.

This is at least the third time. Last time it was Tremors I wanted to watch. And guess what? That was ALSO a boxed set, and I ALSO had to re-buy it in order to watch it.

Kids. Sheesh. Don’t have kids.

Oh, where was I? Right. The Mummy.

I mean, what more do you need to know? There are so many little bits that just make me chortle. Beni hiding behind Evy as Imhotep summons his priests. Beni swearing in Hungarian. Rick striking a match on Ardeth Bey. Ardeth Bey’s delight in flying, and how much he clearly liked the gun from the plane…

I’m sure you’ve seen it, but if you haven’t, go watch it. If you have–well, you should probably go watch it again.

Next? I have baby trees! A couple nonprofits got together to help get more trees planted in my neighborhood, and of course I jumped on that opportunity! Free trees, planted by someone else? Yes, please!

This little stick is a Desert Willow.

three foot tall stick with a few leaves in a ring of stones with mulch
It’s gonna get bigger. And have gorgeous flowers that attract hummingbirds! Cat Theater, coming right up.

Here’s a grownup picture.

This is a Red Push Pistache. Sadly, it won’t give me pistachios.

But look at that fall color! I’m excited.

They were planted Saturday. I’m supposed to water them every two days, so that’s what I’m doing. I may or may not be having long conversations with them (well, monologues so far) as I water them slowly but thoroughly so they can grow big and tall and beautiful.

I’ve been reading The Heroine’s Journey by Gail Carriger. It’s interesting and fun, enough that I’m thinking of picking up one of her fiction books though they haven’t really tempted me before. Well, last night I finished it, but I may reread it before I move on. My focus was not great most of the time I was reading (so it’s a testament to her that I actually DID finish it, even reading the notes!)

A four-day weekend is coming at me, and you better believe THAT is making me happy! I had not planned to cook, as we don’t really worry about tradition around here, but then I thought maybe I would. Then last night, before I was going to go to the store and (hopefully) pick up everything I needed, my kid ticked me off again and I decided not to. By the time I thought “but I wanted to!” it was too late to go to the store last night, and probably too late to get a turkey and have it defrosted enough to cook anyway.

Maybe I’ll pick one up tonight, and cook it Friday or Saturday.

Oh! Friday, the plumber is coming. By Friday night, we should have a shower head that DOESN’T shoot water everywhere but at the person showering! That’s exciting. And next week, with luck, I’ll get the spoiler on my car reattached as it has been wanting to DETACH and I do not wish it to do so. I like my spoiler. It helps me go fast. Zoom, zoom!

Ahem.

I guess this is turning into a gratitude post? If I’m going there, gotta mention the roomie, who is a delightful human to be around, and ALSO bakes bread. Right at this very moment there is a choice of sourdough and yeast bread in the bread box, and that is a beautiful thing.

Also there’s the lioness.

Nadia is pretty, but bitey.

The antelope is–well, it’s amazing he’s still alive, as he’s stupid enough to walk into the face of the lioness when she’s in a hunting mood.

JAWS theme plays…

But he’s quite the snuggler, so I’m glad he’s still alive.

Guess I could also mention my kid. A doofus, but a kind-hearted doofus, and that is something in this hard world. And my unofficially adopted kid. Also a kind-hearted doofus. Together, they are terrifyingly ridiculous.

The Doof Twins

Last but not least, my awesome Turtleduck compatriots. They are so fantastic. I know you’ve noticed, you have to have. But did you notice that Erin’s Fey Touched is FREE RIGHT NOW?
