Too Many Projects, Not Enough Time

I feel like I say this at least once a year. But I’ve done it again. Except it’s worse this time, because my COVID productivity has been terrible and I’ve spent a lot of time not doing anything productive (mostly playing Among Us, coloring on a phone app, and watching a LOT of YouTube videos–but not useful YouTube videos). So my productivity time has been stifled AND I’m trying to get my too many projects done.

Great combination, she says sarcastically.

We’ve been super busy this summer, camping and road-tripping and the like, which admittedly is not helping the productivity problem, but now things are somewhat settling down. Which means that it’s time to do random sewing crafts with the small-ish, mobile ones. I think this comes from a vague idea that, before offspring, I liked to sew, and that I should pass the knowledge on and whatnot, but in practice I do all the sewing and generally get grumpy at every one else for being absolutely no help. So then we don’t do any more sewing projects, until I get the whole passing things on idea going again approximately 12 months later.

(The past couple of years we made worry pets and small owls that can be heated up in the microwave.)

This year we’re going to make reversible cross-back aprons. Well, just me and the littlest one, cuz the rest aren’t interested. Certainly bigger scale than normal, but hopefully not more complicated. However, we went to buy fabric today, and judging how that went, the rest of this may go poorly.

The other issue with bigger sewing projects is that I often get distracted in the middle of them. Normal sewing projects, I mean, where I’m just making clothes. For some reason I have the worst time sewing clothes. Random crafts? Fine. Costumes? No problem. A shirt? The absolute worst. Dunno why. I have a half-done shirt project upstairs, stuffed in the top of the closet. I made the pattern, cut out the fabric–or started to at least–and then…abandoned it (like, three years ago). I’m not sure whether an apron falls into the “craft” category or the clothing category, so I guess we’ll see.

You could argue that the offspring involved will provide additional motivation, but they’re almost as bad as I am about leaving projects in the middle, so I’m not counting on it.

Tomorrow, in theory, we’re pattern making and cutting out the fabric. That is, indeed, most of the work. Once you’ve got your pieces the actual sewing part normally goes pretty easily. Not worried about the reversible-ness or the pockets or anything. That’s old hat.

I suppose the offspring will want to try and use the sewing machine. What’s the age where you trust a child with a sewing machine? I remember sewing a dress for a 4th of July parade by myself when I was 8, so maybe sometime around there? Maybe if I let them push the pedal or something.

And then, you know, there’s the unfinished trip journal (painting day 3 of 16 at the moment), a serial project, a novel project, a novella to outline and a related SkillShare class to figure out, pondering getting space for the art show at MileHiCon (and hence having to make art to show at said art show), a picture book to query…

Yep. Good times over here. I played Among Us for the first time in, like, two months today, for two hours, so you see that I am turning my ways around (she says, also sarcastically).

How’s your productivity going?
